Occupational Therapy Services
Occupational Therapy Evaluation
A pediatric occupational therapy evaluation involves a comprehensive assessment to understand a child’s strengths and areas that may benefit from support. The process includes:
Obtain information from parents and caregivers through interviews and questionnaires
Incorporate standardized assessments to evaluate fine and gross sensory-motor skills with clinical observations in sensory processing, self-care abilities, and social interactions
Analyze data to create a personalized intervention plan that addresses the child's specific needs and goals
Collaborate with families on recommendations and goals in order to create a holistic intervention plan
Occupational Therapy Treatment
Pediatric occupational therapy treatment entails a collaborative approach in order to fully support the developmental needs of children. To follow are the primary goals:
Create a personalized intervention plan that supports the child in reaching their maximum potential across all areas of development
Consider the child as a whole; the physical, emotional, social, and environmental factors that may impact their overall well-being and functioning
Focus on promoting a child's independence and enhancing their skills through activities that are meaningful and purposeful to them
Continue to integrate a mindful and holistic method of care where we have a partnership with parents, teachers, and other professionals
Sensory Social Skills Groups
Sensory social skills groups are specialized programs designed to support individuals develop social skills through sensory-rich activities. The strategies are as follows:
Facilitate using a multidisciplinary approach of care; occupational therapists, speech therapists, and psycho-therapists will lead groups
Incorporate social skills training with play-based sensory integration activities
Enhance social interactions and communication abilities while supporting sensory function and integration in various environments
Support by building social confidence and awareness in a nurturing setting that considers each child's unique sensory profile
Fine Motor Groups
An occupational therapy fine motor group session is a therapeutic gathering where individuals work together to enhance their fine motor skills through various targeted activities:
Build exercises and tasks designed to improve hand-eye coordination, dexterity, and hand strength
Emphasize fine motor skills development related to activities of daily living (IE - brushing teeth, utensils use and tying shoes) and academic tasks such a handwriting
Provide opportunities for social interaction and peer support in fine motor in order to increase confidence
Parent Coaching and Consultation
A pediatric occupational therapy parent consultation and coaching session involves collaborating with parents to empower them in supporting their child's development.
Support and discuss challenges, set achievable goals, and explore ways to integrate therapeutic techniques into daily routines, fostering consistency in and out of the home
Discuss effective strategies and activities tailored to a child's specific needs, helping parents understand the therapeutic process
Partner with parents in order to support the child's progress in OT and also strengthens the family's confidence and skills in promoting their child's overall well-being
Please note: This service is primarily incorporated after an initial occupational therapy evaluation and assessment.
Specialities
-
Sensory Processing and Integration
Sensory processing and integration encompass the brain and nervous system's intricate mechanisms for receiving, interpreting, and organizing sensory information from the environment.
Sensory processing begins with the detection of stimuli through specialized receptors in the body such as touch, sight, sound, taste, and smell
These stimuli are converted into electrical signals that travel to the brain for further processing
Sensory integration involves the brain's ability to merge and make sense of these diverse sensory inputs, forming a cohesive understanding of one's surroundings
This integration enables us to perceive and interact with the world effectively, supporting essential functions like movement coordination, speech comprehension, and emotional regulation
Sensory processing and integration are fundamental to our daily experiences and underpin our ability to navigate and respond to our environment
-
Sensory Motor Skills
Sensory motor skills refer to the coordinated use of sensory information and motor actions.
These skills involve the integration of sensory perception with motor responses -actions performed by muscles and limbs
Sensory motor skills are essential for executing tasks that require precise movements, balance, coordination, and spatial awareness
This develops over time through practice and experience, starting from basic movements like reaching and grasping in infancy to complex actions such as playing sports or performing fine motor tasks like writing and typing in adulthood
Efficient sensory motor skills are crucial for everyday activities, learning, physical functioning and a grounded sense of confidence
-
Fine Motor Skill Acquisition
Fine motor skill acquisition refers to the process through which individuals develop and refine their ability to perform precise and coordinated movements using small muscles, typically in the hands and fingers.
These skills involve the manipulation and control of objects and are essential for tasks that require dexterity, accuracy, and hand-eye coordination
Fine motor skills develop gradually from infancy through childhood and continue to improve into adulthood through practice and experience
A few examples of fine motor skills include grasping objects, using utensils, tying shoelaces, writing, drawing, and manipulating small objects with precision
The acquisition of fine motor skills is influenced by factors such as neurological development, sensory integration, muscle strength, and environmental opportunities for practice
-
Visual Perceptual and Processing Skills
Visual perceptual skills refer to the ability to interpret and make sense of visual information that is perceived through the eyes.
These skills involve the integration of visual input with other sensory and cognitive processes to understand and interact with the environment effectively
Visual perceptual skills are crucial for activities such as reading, writing, driving, sports, and many aspects of daily life that require interpreting and responding to visual information accurately and efficiently
These skills develop through experience, practice, and the maturation of neurological pathways involved in visual processing
-
Self-Regulation and Self-Modulation Skills
Self-regulation and modulation are concepts related to an individual's ability to manage and control their own behavior, emotions, and responses to sensory stimuli.
The ability to self-regulate and modulate are critical for adaptive functioning in various contexts, including learning, social interactions, and daily activities
These skills contribute to an individual's ability to maintain emotional stability, focus attention, and respond effectively to environmental demands
-
Social Emotional Skills
Social- emotional skills encompass a range of abilities that enable individuals to understand and manage their own emotions, communicate effectively with others, empathize with others' perspectives, build and maintain relationships, and make responsible decisions. These skills are essential for navigating the following:
Social interactions
Developing positive relationships
Achieving personal and interpersonal goals with focus and confidence
-
Executive Function Skills
Executive function skills refer to a set of cognitive abilities that enable individuals to plan, organize, strategize, pay attention to and remember details, manage time and space, initiate tasks, and regulate emotions and behavior.
These skills are crucial for goal-directed behavior and adaptive functioning in various aspects of life, including academic achievement, work performance, and daily routines
Executive functions involve higher-order thinking processes that allow individuals to prioritize tasks, solve problems effectively, make decisions, and monitor their own actions to achieve desired outcomes
This is essential for independent living and success in navigating complex social, play and academic environments
-
Mindfulness Practice
Mindfulness practice refers to the intentional awareness of the present moment.
It involves bringing one's attention to the sensations, thoughts, and emotions occurring in the present without reacting to them
This practice often involves techniques such as meditation, breathing exercises, and body scans to cultivate a state of mindfulness
The goal is to develop a heightened sense of awareness, clarity, and acceptance of one's experiences, which can lead to reduced stress, improved concentration, and greater overall well-being
Mindfulness is rooted in ancient contemplative traditions but has been adapted and studied in modern evidence-based neuroscience for its therapeutic benefits
